AIARE Level 1 Avalanche Course Description The level one is a 3 day (24 hour) introduction to avalanche hazard management. While adjusting to the CV-19 situation we will be reducing risk to the public by conducting all of our classroom work online in advance of the course and then meeting outside in small groups for the field portions.

AIARE 1 is the first level of a nationally standardized curriculum and associated framework for avalanche hazard management. There is of course a component on companion rescue, but the focus is very much on decision making. Namely, how to avoid and manage avalanche risk. The AIARE 2 takes off where the AIARE 1 ends, adding to your avalanche hazard management toolbox with the introduction of critical hazard assessment factors. By describing and discussing weather, snowpack and avalanche processes, students are able to identify how these processes relate to observations and travel within avalanche terrain.

This is an AIARE certified level 1 avalanche course consisting of three evening lectures at the Mountaineers clubhouse in Seattle, and a two day field trip based out of the Mountaineers Baker Lodge at the Mount Baker ski area (lodging costs for Saturday night ARE included, see below for more information).

Our level 1 class covers a lot of information, so plan on long days that begin early and end in the early evening. Due to Covid, we are transitioning to the online learning AIARE module. For most groups, this will mean learning much of the didactic material of the course through self paced, online learning.
